FRANKLIN AVENUE IN PALM SPRINGS: Sonny Bono

Palm Springs

Palms Springs came of age in the mid-20th Century as a playground to the stars, including Bob Hope and others. But keeping watch over downtown is late entertainer and politician Sonny Bono.

About on the exact spot where old Sonny sits was the main entrance to Bullocks Wilshire; the desert branch of the tony specialty store (not really a department store--no toys, TV sets, etc) was located on the property that now houses the Mercado Plaza complex of shops and eateries. BW was a mid-century-modern landmark building. A lot of us howled when it was demolished in the late 80s, but to no avail.

In the heyday of "The Playground of the Stars" in the 1940s and 1950s Palm Canyon Drive was adorned with outposts of some of the toniest LA and BH stores: Silverwoods, Desmonds, Robinson's, Saks, Milton F Kreis, Sy Devore, etc.
