Warning: Westfield Century City Starts Charging For Parking On...

Century City

As we wrote in October, the days of free parking at the Westfield Century City mall are about to end. And now it's official: According to a sign spotted today at the mall, effective February 1, you're going to pay for the luxury of parking.

And it won't be cheap. According to the sign, the parking will cost you $1 PER HOUR for the first three hours -- and then $1 PER 15 MINUTES after that. (In other words, stay 3 hours for $3, then get out.) Looks like the theater will validate (and apparently Gelson's too, although it's not clear for how long). But other than that, you're screwed.

But hey, if you spend $250 in a single day, Westfield will kindly give you free parking for the day. THANK YOU WESTFIELD.

Aside from the obvious greed factor, they also do this because all the surrounding buildings in Century City charge criminal amounts of money for parking, and people who work in the nearby buildings were using their less-expensive spaces.

If they were doing this to stop the people who are going to the surrounding buildings from parking there, they would allow people who have movie validations to park 4 or 5 hours for free. Instead, they are making everyone pay to park no matter what (unless you spend 250 dollars of course). It's pure greed.

I'm sure someone at Westfield noted that people were parking at the mall instead of in the building they were actually going to, and then they just decided that if they were going to change the parking rates they might as well go for a full money grab.

I will go elsewhere to see movies

i see a film a week there for years and it was because of the parking incentive

and then i also shopped there

"pound wise and penny foolish" as the saying goes and i hope others follow and find a new mall

The only way we are going to successfully get people out of their cars and into alternative transportation is to start jacking up the prices for parking.

And what "alternative transportation" would that be? There is none in Los Angeles. Expensive parking means rich people will still be allowed to park wherever they want while the poor and middle class will just stay home. Yeah, that seems fair.

EXACTLY! everyone thinks i should be biking everywhere around the city or taking the bus. i'm fine if that works for someone else but it doesn't work for me. i'm not sure why everyone thinks its okay to force us out of our cars. that argument is so played out!

My "alternative transportation" is to sit my ass at home and shop on the internet vs. the hassle of a mall who charge me to come spend money.

A movie costs something like $12.00 at AMC, still worth it to go to another building and just buy a movie ticket and validate it. I think the lot across the street charges something like $20+ for four hours.

Parking has never been free. It's a matter of who is paying for it. I find it humorous the entitled attitude many people have; as if free parking is a basic human right. $3 for 3 hours? C'mon, that's nothing! Even "middle class" people can afford that. A parking garage is not chea to build, do trying to make some revenue to offset that cost is not greedy, IMO.

I have witnessed this 1st hand: People parking at the mall to work and moving the car every 3 hours to stay free.

So why not just keep it free after 5 PM M to F and all day Sat and Sun when most peeps are not working in the offices.

They are using the cheating as an excuse to raise prices all times.
