Scenes from Christmas Eve 2019 in Los Angeles
Another Christmas Eve in Los Angeles, and we stuck to most of the traditions: Brunch at Square One, followed by paddle boats in Echo Park, in honor of the Blogger Kid's birthday. (Or is it Blogger Teen now? He just turned 15.) Followed in the afternoon by mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. But our tradition of catching the last half hour of the Los Angeles County Holiday Celebration at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is over. A new ticketing policy prevented us from walking in, like we have in the past. So instead, we took in the lights at Grand Park. Farewell, LA County Holiday Celebration, I think that's now history.

Christmas Eve in Los Angeles: 2018 Edition
Our Christmas Eve traditions are tied to the Blogger Kid's birthday — he turned 14 on Monday — in addition to the holiday, and take us through the city. There's something special about being downtown and seeing the iconic City Hall lit up, next to the holiday lights and Christmas tree of Grand Park. Here's a look at our Christmas Eve in Los Angeles:
One tradition that we have had to alter: We used to eat at the Square One location at the Echo Park Boathouse before renting one of the paddleboats. Square One is gone, and its replacement, Beacon, wasn't open on Christmas Eve. So we continued the tradition by eating at the Square One location on Hyperion in Silver Lake *after* the paddleboats.
One big change to the paddleboats: New vendor Wheel Fun switched out the old boats with these swan boats. They're easier to paddle and more fun to look at, even though the swan heads partially block the view.
Another tradition: The 4 p.m. Children's Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Downtown Los Angeles.
After that, we book it across the street to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to catch the tail end of the annual Los Angeles County Holiday Celebration. The annual free event, which celebrates its 60th anniversary next year, boasts a wide range of talent — including, as seen above, the Daniel Ho Trio, with Halau Hula Keali'i O Nalani, Makoto Taiko, and the Arcadia High School Orchestra.
The Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles
Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea end the show.
One last look at Grand Park and City Hall, before we head off to see the extended family. Merry Christmas from Los Angeles.

Christmas Eve 2017 In Los Angeles
There's no place we'd rather be on Christmas Eve than in Los Angeles — the weather's great, and we've got a whole host of traditions to celebrate the Blogger Kid's birthday.
The Blogger Kid turned 13 today. He's now... the Blogger Teen.
What.
One of our Christmas Eve traditions: Breakfast at Square One (formerly at the Echo Park boathouse, now at their Fountain Ave. location), followed by paddle boats in Echo Park. The weather was great for an hour on the water.
Even a rainbow peered through the Echo Park fountain!
Halo Halo for lunch at Max's in Glendale
Another annual tradition: Christmas Eve mass at the Cathedral in downtown...
... followed by the final hour of the free annual Los Angeles County Holiday Celebration at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
A bonus treat at the end of this year's show: An engagement, live on stage!
A beautiful way to end the night. Hope you have a Merry Christmas!

There Will Be Ube, and More Scenes From the Festival of Philippine Art
The 26th annual Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture (FPAC) took place on Saturday in Echo Park, and Maria and I brought along the Blogger Kid (the other one was at a party) to take in the sights, sounds... and of course, food.
First launched in 1992 as part of the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department’s Festivals Program, the FPAC continues to grow; this year's theme was Salin-Lahi, or "Bridging Generations," and featured headliners including Apl.de.Ap of the Black Eyed Peas. The event is organized by the Association for the Advancement of Filipino American Arts and Culture(FilAm ARTS).
Various pavilions showcased wellness, culinary, seniors, literary and youth programs. We, of course, headed straight for the food. Some pics from this year's event:

Scenes from Christmas 2015 in Los Angeles

Christmas Eve brings quite a few traditions to the Franklin Avenue Four: It's also the Blogger Kid's birthday, so the morning is devoted to celebrating his special day via breakfast (at Square One boathouse) and paddle boats at Echo Park. Then it's off to do last minute prep (which means braving the Trader Joe's madhouse), followed by children's mass at downtown's Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels; then the last hour of the Los Angeles County Holiday Celebration at the Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (that's the Music Center Christmas tree above) and then celebrating with family in the Valley.
Some pics from a 2015 Christmas in L.A.:

Echo Park

Christmas Eve at Trader Joe's is not recommended. The parking lot is a war zone, and nerves are on edge. (The guy screaming to managers about someone sneaking more items into the 10 Items or Less line was a special treat.)

Peace on Earth

At the Cathedral

The free L.A. County Holiday Celebration has been a local Christmas Eve tradition for 56 years.

Citrus Singers (40-member voice ensemble with handbells)

Aloe Blacc performs two holiday standards

Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles

Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles (all-female mariachi band)

As tradition, the show ends with the performers and audience members singing "Silent Night."

Straight from City Hall, Merry Christmas to you and yours!
