IndieWire Honors: Cary Joji Fukunaga on Being a Filmmaking 'Maniac'

At the second annual IndieWire Honors, held Nov. 1 at the No Name bar in Los Angeles, "Maniac" executive producer and director Cary Joji Fukunaga was among eight filmmakers and actors honored for their achievement in creative independence. I sat down with Fukunaga to talk about the blending of TV and film, and whether he sees a difference between the two. Also, how he came up with an interesting visual style for "Maniac" and what inspires him.

The 2017 IndieWire Honors recognized Mary J. Blige, Sterling K. Brown, James Franco, Diane Kruger, Kumail Nanjiani, and Issa Rae, at a celebration on November 2 in Los Angeles. It was IndieWire's first ever awards event, and the response was fantastic. Attendees at No Name on Fairfax heard the honorees give brief, often humorous, speeches, but mostly enjoyed mingling, drinking themed cocktails and listening to music spun by KCRW DJ Dan Wilcox.
