Another Birthday for Jacks

 

Oh yeah, it's the Blogger Kid's day too! But here's Jacks, celebrating with a delicious frosted bone.

I don't think we've ever seen Jacks as excited or playful as when we recently brought him to the Eagle Rock park. The dog park was too crowded, but on a late Sunday, there were plenty of other places for dogs to play. Unleashed, Jacks perhaps had too much fun: In his excitement, he sprained his foot! The fun was cut short by his yelp, and we took him home. A few days later, a vet visit confirmed his sprain. He's taking it easy and taking some meds, but hopefully he'll be ready to have some fun again soon.

This year I couldn't wait until Christmas morning for one specific reason: I had decided to surprise the family with a regal painting of Jacks, dressed as "The Aristocrat," via the popular Crown & Paw design service. My Variety colleague Elaine first alerted us to the ridiculous joy of Crown & Paw — and it was worth it. 

For $71 (yes, that included a 30% discount), I ordered The Aristocrat a custom pet canvas measuring 12" x 18" x 1. It was as simple as sending a photo of Jacks, and a week or two later they sent a copy of the painting to be approved. It came a few days before Christmas, early enough to wrap and stick under the tree without anyone even noticing. It was a hit!

HiFi Kitchen Bake Sale Supports the Black Lives Matter Movement

We headed to the HiFi Kitchen in Historic Filipinotown yesterday to grab some baked goodies for a good cause: Proceeds from the treats went to the Black Lives Matter movement. By the time we got there, alas, almost everything was sold out, so alas, no ube dessert for us. We still bought a few donuts. Next time we'll get there early! Below, you'll see Jacks also joined us to show some support.

Santa and Jacks: How Our Dog Met Jolly Old Saint Nick

We haven't written much here about our dog Jacks -- partly because we've been too busy to write about anything lately. But the bichon/poodle mix has been a part of our family since October 2016, which is pretty surprising given that I didn't grow up with a pet and had no interest/desire to have one now. But the Blogger boys wore me down, and when we met Jacks via a rescue service a little over a year ago, it just felt right. He was the perfect size for our tiny house, super mellow, house trained, and even hypoallergenic. How could we say no? Now, I couldn't imagine our home without him. 

Recently, our neighborhood had a Christmas carol event, and Santa was there to visit with the kids. We brought Jacks along, and Santa asked to see our little dog. They quickly bonded. I have a feeling Jacks will have a few extra treats in his stocking this year.
