Cherry 7-up Definitely Got Its Money's Worth

Above, a long-neglected billboard sits atop the Cameo Theatre on Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles.

As far as I can tell, this billboard hasn't been altered (well, except for some graffiti) in 20 years. The tagline -- "Isn't it cool in pink?" -- was used by Cherry 7-up circa 1987 to introduce the soft drink; the neon colors (pink and green) of the design also dates it to that time.

Below, Broadway bustles during the day, with hundreds of people walking up and down its streets -- passing by stores and abandoned movie palaces (including the Cameo). Why hasn't this billboard ever been changed?

Strange as it sounds, I've been semi-obsessed with this billboard, as a symbol of downtown's long neglect. An outdoor agency erected this Cherry 7-up ad 20 years ago -- and then no one ever bothered to replace it.

Later this afternoon: More pics from a Saturday trip downtown.
