FRANKLIN AVENUE IN HAWAII: Battle of the Breakfasts

Spam is a way of life in Hawaii -- c'mon, where else can you find a McDonald's that sells a Spam, Egg and Cheese McGriddle? (Well, perhaps Guam -- Santos? They have 'em there?) When I lived in Hawaii, I wasn't so thrilled with the idea of Spam... but it's funny how when you miss a place, you even start to romanticize the stuff you never really were into in the first place. Now I dig on Spam Musubi and the like... perhaps it's just a way to still feel like I'm a part of the Islands.

But as much as I now don't mind the Spam, when it comes to breakfast I much prefer Portuguese sausage -- slighty spicy, mighty tasty, and a nice morning compliment to eggs and rice. Sure, you can find a traditional local breakfast just about anywhere -- but to really get the full, greasy, fast food experience, we hit both Zippy's and McDonald's.

In both cases, I ordered the Portuguese sausage, while Maria got the Spam. How do they measure up?

Zippy's breakfast

Meat: Zippy's Portuguese sausage is tastier and spicier, while McDonald's was a little more rubbery. (The Spam was about the same.) ADVANTAGE: Zippy's.

Eggs: Zippy's offers you a choice -- you want 'em scrambled? Fried? Your pick. McDonald's offers you that typical fast food egg that's kinda scrambled, but more like a sheet of egg. ADVANTAGE: Zippy's.

McDonald's breakfast

Price: $3.89 at McDonald's, $5.30 at Zippy's. The size of the portions are about the same. ADVANTAGE: McDonald's.

Result: Zippy's wins!
