I pass by the East Hollywood outpost of Sears (above) every day, and often wonder whether it does decent business. Once upon a time, all department stores stood alone. But these days it's rare to see stand-alone non-luxury (a.k.a. non-Barney's or Saks) department stores anymore; they're all usually anchored to a shopping mall or plaza. Beyond that, the East Hollywood Sears isn't in the greatest of shape -- it's still sporting the Sears logo from the late 1970s (the company has gone through at least three nameplate changes since then).
But buried inside the L.A. Times' recent Calendar section profile of council chairman Eric Garcetti was this tidbit:
Garcetti took off the jacket of his dark blue Boss suit and carefully laid it in the back of his electric Toyota RAV4. As his communications director, Josh Kamensky, drove to the next party, Garcetti checked election results on his Treo — it was the night of the state primaries — and gestured out the window to various points of 13th District interest.
"Per square foot, that's the best-selling Sears in the country — can you believe that?" he said, as the Sears store in East Hollywood passed by.
The story itself focused on Garcetti's part in helping attract a new vibrancy to Hollywood, in the form of new hotels, restaurants and clubs.
