Caltrans is still trying to figure out who put up the fake freeway signs pointing motorists to Donald Trump's new Rancho Palos Verdes golf course.
According to the L.A. Times, the Trump organization has denied any involvement in the signs, which mimic real, green freeway pointers. Also denying responsibility is the Heavy Trash collective, who famously stuck fake MTA "Aqua Line" signs around town several years ago.
Notes the story:
Puzzled motorists first noticed the official-looking but phony signs pointing the way to the Trump National Golf Club a week ago. So far, California Department of Transportation maintenance workers have removed four of them along two freeways.
But others have reportedly popped up near freeway onramps to confound commuters and transportation engineers alike.
Most resemble the standard green freeway directional signs used by Caltrans throughout the state. But at least one mimics the brown directional signs used in public parks.
Without any real leads, I'd suggest also asking the folks at L.A.'s branch of the Cacophony Society, which also sometimes does non-sequitur pranks like this. (Check out the links on their site for other potential groups behind the prank.)
Of course, the signs have been up in some cases for months -- and if they were part of a prank, you'd think the person(s) behind it would have found a way to leak it out earlier. Which again makes me wonder about Trump's involvement...
