Classic Ambassador

Reader and frequent The Ambassador's Last Stand contributor Tess has been researching the late, grand hotel at the library, where she's found more than 100 photos of the Ambassador through the years.

She shares a few:

A "Music Week Parade" takes place on the Ambassador's front lawn, in 1941. Tess notes: You can see that the facade of the Cocoanut Grove is quite different than the one you and I were used to..

Indeed, those arches in the front of the Cocoanut Grove have only become visible recently as the former hotspot as been almost completely gutted.

Dessert Storm: Day One

My dessert eating had finally gotten out of control. It was time to put a stop to it, and Lent seemed to be as good enough of a reason as any. So this year, that's it -- no more sweets, no more dessert. For the next 40 days, I'm going cold turkey.

For some of you, that doesn't sound like much of a challenge. But I grew up in a household where dessert wasn't only a privilege, it was a right. I honed my ice cream love through college thanks to the aforemention (below) Ben & Jerry's. And when I met Maria, I got spoiled. She was always on a quest to create the perfect brownie, or the best-ever lemon tart. I was the lucky food tester.

I managed to avoid plumping up through my 20s, thanks I suppose to metabolism. And when I hit 30, and my metabolism started to give, my braces kept me in line. I wasn't eating as much anyway, so that pint of B&J's wasn't the end of the world.

But then, in a one-two punch, my braces came off, and Evan was born. Yes, I managed to throw on some new daddy pounds (gym? Who has time for the gym?) -- and those desserts were the most likely culprits.

So it's time to stop. But it's not going to be easy. I was already hit with my first temptation at lunch today, as I sat through the first part of the Publicists Guild of America luncheon (don't ask) at the Beverly Hilton. Usually these rubber chicken lunches are only redeemed by whatever chocolate concoction is whipped up for dessert. And that truly was the case this year. But I stuck to my guns -- I ate the strawberry and raspberry surrounding the chocolate/fudgy slice... but pushed the cake away in the end.

39 days to go!

Coffee: It's Not Just for Coffee Anymore

My slow road toward coffee addiction began in college, when I tasted a mocha beverage at a nearby coffeehouse (which were just beginning to become the rage). It was coffee... but with a chocolatey accent. Not bad. I eventually moved on to lattes... and then, the mother drug.

Now I drink way too much every day. But with an infant in the house, it's what keeps me going. (Although, to be fair, I was already downing way too much coffee long before Blogger Baby showed up.)

So clearly I'm excited about the new coffee-centric flavors making the rounds.

I generally avoid the regular flavor Ben & Jerry's pints, in favor of the frozen yogurt or low-fat varieties. But I couldn't pass up B&J's new Vermonty Python: Coffee liqueur ice cream with a chocolate cookie crumb swirl & fudge cow pieces. Maria and I loved it. Another brilliant B&J flavor.

Who cares if it's artificially flavored? It's a coffee-flavored Kit-Kat! Genius! (And pretty good too.) But Kit-Kat, why must you tease us with that "limited edition" threat?

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm very curious about the new Coca-Cola Blak -- uh-uh, that's right, a Coke/coffee hybrid. Again, genius. Although most people I've talked to find this digusting. I'll give it a try.
