When Maria and I travel abroad, hitting the grocery stores ranks up there among our top priorities. Exploring the sheer variety of products not found in the U.S. -- and discovering which items have made it abroad -- is always a treat.
Of course, you can do that right here at home as well. And since we're not hitting other shores again in the near future (house and baby have pretty much limited vacation funds), hitting some of L.A.'s ethnic markets is as close as we'll get to foreign travel.
Our favorite remains Glendale's Arko Foods, which expanded last year into a much larger space. The Filipino market carries all sorts of stuff we love, from halo-halo mix and Calamansi juice to my fave beer (if I have one), San Miguel Light. Arko also has a full kitchen, where we regularly order pancit, kare kare and other items. Including taho. Yum.
But more on Arko in a future post. More recently, we've started making weekly trips to Vallarta Supermarket, where not only do we load up on reasonably priced fruits and veggies for Evan, but we also grab imported sodas from Latin America, homemade sweet breads and sometimes some horchata.
A couple of shots from Vallarta (I would have more, but I was told to stop taking pics):
assorted breads
chiles
juice counter -- we love the horchata
piƱatas
