Quote to Note: Rats!

Given our ongoing rodent problem, I was more than a little interested in today's L.A. Times feature about New York's rat problem. Here's a reality check:

"Most likely, if you are in New York while you are reading this sentence or even in any other major city in America, then you are in proximity to two or more rats having sex," Robert Sullivan wrote in his 2004 book "Rats: Observations on the History and Habitat of the City's Most Unwanted Inhabitants." He noted that rats can mate up to 20 times a day, meaning that one pair could have 15,000 offspring in a year.
.
Nice. Puts our problem in slight perspective -- well, unless there are thousands of rodents under our house. For now, we've stopped storing our garbage in the trash can under the sink -- hoping to take away the main draw to the cabinet. We've definitely noticd a decrease in rodent droppings since then. But yes, we're still mulling an exterminator.

Especially after this weekend's heat-induced invasion of the ants at our house (and I'm sure your home too!)
