One of the coolest things in Los Angeles is the downtown area. For most Angelenos, this is untapped territory but for others, downtown is a great resource for flowers, clothes, shoes, jewelry and the list goes on and on. My friends and I ventured to the Garment District today to get some fabric for various personal projects we are doing.
Haggling is a sport when it comes to shopping downtown. My friend C and I were a little disappointed as another friend, P, agreed very quickly to the lower price that the vendor offered. "Amateur," we whispered to each other smiling.
After the sale, we gave P pointers on what to do. "You have to ask for the lower price, then counter back with a dollar or so less than what they told you." "Then, you say, we'll think about it and might come back." 9 times out of 10, they'll be following you out agreeing to the lower price. P nods saying, "I'm new at this. You have to help me." Okay, grasshopper.
It was a successful afternoon as I headed back $20 lighter. In exchange, I have 3 yards of denim to partly cover our futon cushion (I already have the other fabric to sew it with), a pair of sunglasses for Mike, some knitting notions for me, and paid part of our parking fee.
