The Genius of SBC

Maria and I moved to Glendale two months ago... but the fact that we simply transferred our DSL account from one phone number to another has just been too complicated for our pals at SBC to grasp.

We obviously wanted to keep our same email address (mikemaria@sbcglobal.net), which also doubles as the Member ID for our account.

But because we switched phone numbers, SBC wanted us to re-register. So we did.

The SBC registration site then prompted us: If you're already an existing SBC Yahoo! DSL customer, please type in your Member ID.

OK. mikemaria@sbcglobal.net.

Please enter your phone number.

Done.

Your phone number does not match your Member ID.

Well no, it shouldn't, we just changed phone numbers. (Not that you can reason with an automated web form. Or that there's even room to do so.)

I tried again. This time, I typed in our new phone number first. Then our existing Member ID.

We're sorry, but that ID is already taken.

Yeah, by us!

Ugh. I gave up. Our DSL was working fine, we were being billed, so why rock the boat?

Here's why: Last week we received a nasty letter from SBC, wondering why we hadn't selected our Member ID yet.

I called SBC.

"Our records show that you haven't selected a Member ID."

Well, we're using the same Member ID we used at the old house. Works fine.

"I'm sorry sir, but you're going to have to go back to our secure website and re-register."

Sigh. So I did just that.

SBC, you're on my list.
