Our First Big Glendale Test

We moved to Glendale just in time to take part in the controversial vote on whether the city should allow a brand new town center ("Americana at Brand") in the heart of its downtown.

Developed by The Grove's Rick Caruso, the town center would boast park space, retailers and apartments. The owners of the Glendale Galleria, however, have been running their own campaign to stop the development, calling the $77.1 million public investment from the city a giveaway.

Voters go to the polls Tuesday to make their final decision. Glendale's News-Press has the latest on the debate here.

Meanwhile, Caruso and company lay out their position here, while Galleria owners General Growth make their argument over here.

While both sides' arguments have their strong and weak points, we're leaning toward voting "Yes" on the measures. The Galleria's argument still smacks of fear of competition -- and their argument that the town center is getting a handout smacks of hypocrisy, since the Galleria received the same type of funds when it was built in the early 80s.

Ultimately, I think a town center will raise Glendale's profile -- and property values -- better than another ten years of debate over what to do over an empty lot. And although I'm concerned over the distruction of a historic fire station on the lot (much like The Grove's elimination of the original Gilmore Bank), I'd say there are still more pros than cons.
