As a fan of downtown Los Angeles, I get a kick out of the sheer number of commercials shot there. Virtually every car commercial that features a city scene is filmed in our downtown, and our skyline -- with the distinctive Library Tower (officially known as the "U.S. Bank Tower") -- is the focal point of countless 30-second spots.
Thanks to TiVo, I'll frequently pause ads to figure out where they were filmed. Hence a new semi-regular feature here at Franklin Avenue, Los Angeles: Ad Town.
First up: The current DirecTV commercial, first seen during the Super Bowl. Here's a shot of a TV rolling down the roof of the Orpheum Theater, as we face west.
