Power 106 now airs its Sunday night staple, "The Old Skool Show," weekdays at noon as well. (A response to the arrival of 93.5 KDAY, which promises "hip-hop today and back in the day," I'm sure.)
Yes, I'll admit, I enjoy the old skool flava... but this is where I confess my deepest secret: I especially love the cheesy, old dance tracks.
The freestyle, HiNRG, classic house, etc. that I loathed in the late 80s and early 90s. Tracks like Noel's "Silent Morning," as well as the synth-heavy pop drivel from acts like Stevie B. and Johnny O. (Did any of them have full last names?) A decade and a half later, it suddenly brings me back to high school dances and pep rallies. The songs are still terrible -- but infectious.
It's also a throwback to the early days of Power 106, before it became an all-hip hop outlet. Back in its "Pure Energy... Dance Now!" era, actor Jay Thomas was the morning DJ (?!) and the station was a rhythmic-leaning CHR.
Power 106's Jeff Garcia and D.J. Rawn play the cheesiest tracks on Mondays and Fridays during their "Aqua Net" sets. Noon weekdays on Power 106 -- it's one of my Los Angeles guilty pleasures. (More to come!)
