Pope John Paul II

They're mourning across the globe, including here in Los Angeles, where Pope John Paul II visited in 1987. Our church, Los Feliz's St. Casimir (across from Marshall High's football field), acknowledged the Pontiff's death by draping black ribbon over the door.

Meanwhile, the Sunday edition of the CBS Evening News included a segment on rememberances in Los Angeles -- specifically, downtown's Our Lady Queen of Angels Church, or as it's commonly known, La Placita (not to be confused with the similarly-named downtown cathedral). La Placita, of course, is where Maria and I married in 2002.

Above, La Placita's Father Arnold Abelardo speaks with CBS News about the impact of the Pope on the heavily Catholic immigrant Latino community.
