Bases Covered
California escaped the brunt of the Pentagon's list of proposed base closures, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Among local installations saved: Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo (above), home of the Space and Missile Systems Center -- and famously, the nation's only Air Force Base without a runway.
LAAFB is also unlike most military installations in that it's not all located in one spot. Much of the base's housing, for example, is actually located at Fort MacArthur, and old Army post in San Pedro.
Although tiny, the base still boasts the usual amenities, however, including a modest-sized base exchange (BX) and commissary (i.e., grocery store, as seen below).
