Rate-A-Restaurant, #62 in a series
Restaurant: Susina Bakery
Location: 7122 Beverly Boulevard, Los Angeles (near La Brea)
Type of restaurant: Dessert (as well as cafe fare)
We stipulated: It was late, but we wanted to take full advantage of being out on the town sans Evan. Yes, we needed to hit dessert, and we needed a place that was open late. Susina keeps its doors open until 11 p.m.
What we ordered: We split the Individual Banana Cream Pie ("thin shortdough crust lined with chocolate; handmade caramel; banana pastry cream; fresh bananas. Topped with fresh whipped cream and chocolate shavings"). At $7.50, the pie easily served two -- with some left to bring home.
High point: Delicious. I was still stuffed from dinner -- at Buddha's Belly, our second trip there (the wait was much shorter than our first visit, since we called ahead to put our name on the list this time) -- but couldn't stop nibbling on the crmbly crust and gooey-caramel-dripped banana cream.
Low point: I always feel like I'm in an episode of "Seinfeld" when I pay my bill at a spot where you order at the counter and take the food yourself. What do you do when they hand you the credit card receipt -- and there's a spot for a tip? Sometimes I do nothing -- I just sign the bill and walk away. There's got to be a better system.
Overall impression: L.A. needs more late night, gathering spot bakeries like Susina. It's a start. (I'd even stay open a tad later, to midnight).
Chance we will go back: There are many pies, tarts and morning pastries to be had -- so yes, we'll definitely be back.
