Crappy Ways to Die, L.A. Edition

If you gotta go, it's unfortunate that these are the ways... from today's Los Angeles Times:

:: Man Dies in Cave-In at Site of Former Brewery: A man digging for artifacts of the defunct Maier Brewing Co. in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday night died when his quest triggered the collapse of a dirt wall, trapping him beneath tons of earth, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The man, who has not been identified, was digging for old tin beer cans and brewing equipment with three family members with pickaxes and shovels when he was buried by boulders and tons of dirt at 7:43 p.m. A 65-year-old male relative from Whittier managed to dig himself out. The cave-in occurred near the intersection of East Commercial and Hewitt streets, the site of a planned extension of railroad tracks from Union Station. Bystanders reported the incident.

As someone who appreciates urban explorers (apparently both were enthusiasts of the long-defunct brewery), this really saddens me. The LAFD's Brian Humphrey has the whole story -- including the firefighters' brave efforts to try and save the victim -- here.

:: Man Killed Riding Inner Tube on River: A man died Tuesday after floating down the fast-moving San Gabriel River in an inner tube, officials said.

The 25-year-old man, who was not immediately identified, was found face-down in the river shortly before 1 p.m., said Brendon Peart, a Los Angeles County fire dispatch supervisor.

Less sympathetic here. Floating down the San Gabriel River in an inner tube?! I'm guessing, "Jackass" fan.
