My colleague (and Variety.com editor) Alex Romanelli found this nugget in coverage of Sony BMG's recent payola admission:
In his court documents calling for changes in the way Sony BMG handles its radio promotion, New York attorney general Eliot Spitzer was kind enough to note that the term "payola" was created by Variety in 1938.
You'd be surprised by the number of now-common words and phrases that were actually first coined by Variety, such as "sitcom." Check out a extensive list of Variety's slanguage here.
