Peter Jennings, 1938-2005
Sad to hear of Peter Jennings' passing. I grew up in an ABC household -- even when the network's newscast was deep in third place, my family always watched "Good Morning America" in the AM, and "World News Tonight" in the evening. Growing up, it was always Peter -- there was something about his sophisticated delivery, the air he exuded, the promise of context and depth with my news. And later, a cool, calm sense of humor that came in handy during lengthy live reports, such as the 2000 millennium coverage, or the 2000 and 2004 elections.
With Brokaw and Rather both retiring, this should have been the moment that Jennings reclaimed the No. 1 slot he held for the second half of the 1980s and first half of the 1990s. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be. And now, an era in TV journalism has truly closed, as the three anchors most of us grew up with have now disappeared from the airwaves.
