Bowled Over
It was "Destination Hawaii" night at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday... and for the first time ever, we'd secured a box at the legendary outdoor ampitheater. (As opposed to our normal nosebleed seats -- hosting a Hawaiian radio show has its privileges.)
We ditched Blogger Baby (sorry, Evan), while Anthony and Candice found a sitter for Sophia (one of Evan's several gal pals... yes, the little guy is popular with the ladies) -- making for a rare night on the town for four frazzled, sleep-deprived new parents.
We managed to stay awake, though, and picnic in the box while Hawaiian contemporary artists Na Leo Pilimehana opened, followed by main attraction Keali'i Reichel (above).
This is the third time we've seen Keali'i, who always puts on a good show. Keali'i sang several of his most popular tunes, including "Maunaleo" -- the song Maria and I danced to at our wedding. In previous shows, Keali'i was more active, moving around the stage, but this time he mostly stuck with singing and playing the guitar -- leaving the dancing to several hula halaus.
The night was chilly, and as usual I forgot to bring a jacket. But the skies were clear, the sound was good and (thanks to our seats) we could actually see what was happening on stage.

Forget lighters -- these days, audiences sway their lit cell phones in the air. At the Bowl, it makes for a pretty cool (and modern) sight.
Parents playing hooky... at least for a few hours.
