Rate-A-Restaurant, #74 in a series
Restaurant: KP's: A Vietnamese-American Deli
Location: 2616 Hyperion Ave., Los Angeles (Silver Lake)
Type of restaurant: Vietnamese
They stipulated: If you're too lazy to get out of your car, or can't find parking, KP's advises you to "just honk" -- they'll bring your phoned-in order to your car. (We dined in, however.)
What we ordered: BBQ Pork Banh Mi (Vietnamese BBQ pork, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber, cilantro, Maggi sauce and mayo; $6) for Maria and Pulled Chicken Bahn Mi (chicken, pickled carrots and daikon radish, cucumber, cilantro, Maggi sauce and mayo, plus jalapenos; $6) for Mike.
High point: The sandwiches were tasty and the service was friendly... plus Evan (a.k.a. Blogger Baby) made a new friend at the table next to us, a boy around his same age.
Low point: $6 does push it to the limit when it comes to the price of a sandwich.
Overall impression: But it's worth it -- so much so that Los Angeles magazine even featured KP's in its recent "Cheap Eats" issue. It's a small shop, but there's nice indoor and outdoor seating, and the food arrives quick. But back to the sandwiches (which is all KP's serves, besides a few side salads and springrolls): If you've never had a Vietnamese sandwich, KP's would be a great place to start. The crusty bread, flavorful garnishes and cuts of meat -- all lightly sauced with Maggi and mayo -- are perfectly blended.
Chance we will go back: Very good chance, especially since we're frequently in the neighborhood (our optometrist, for example, is right across the street).
