Smokey Bearing It

Quick fire update... Forget that faint sewage smell from a week ago -- Los Angeles, and in particular the Valley, currently smells like a poorly lit campfire. We could sniff the smoke all the way in Los Feliz/Silver Lake and Glendale; and driving north on the 5 and west on the 118, the smell got more intense the closer I got to Northridge.

I spoke to an NBC p.r. exec at around 7 p.m.; she was at the CBS Radford lot in Studio City (observing the live "Will & Grace" episode) and mentioned smelling smoke and being showered by black ash. Blogging.la has several posts up from around the city, including pics of ashfall as far east as Silver Lake... and a ton more in West Hills.

Speaking of the far northwest portion of the Valley, our extended family is safe, but left their home there for slightly safer confines elsewhere.

I'm at KCSN right now kicking out the Hawaiian jams, and noticed that Cal State Northridge canceled its classes tonight "due to poor air quality as a result of the smoke from area brush fires burning along the Los Angeles/Ventura County line." CSUN said it would re-evaluate local air quality on Friday morning to determine whether to re-open the campus.

Meanwhile, increased humidity and a drop in temperature has increased optimism that the fires will soon be under control. According to the L.A. Times, the fires had charred 17,000 acres -- yet had gutted just one house, a garage and several outbuildings at the Rocketdyne plant several miles south of Simi Valley.
