Jack On; Latino Power

The Summer 2005 Los Angeles Arbitron ratings are in, and the big winners are 102.7 KIIS-FM, 93.1 Jack-FM (KCBS) and Latino 96.3 (KXOL).

KIIS was the number one station overall with listeners 12-plus (apparently the station's more hip-hop oriented sound is resonating), while Jack continues to increase listenership and rule the money demo, 25-54.

Then there's Latino, which I told you to keep an eye on in May:

The real game changer in the L.A. radio market could very well be this past weekend's birth of Latino 96.3.

The station -- which goes by the call letters KXOL-FM -- will focus on the rising sounds of Reggaeton, which is a sort of high-energy Spanish hip-hop. And it threatens to take listeners away from market leaders like Power 106 and KIIS-FM.

Latino 96.3 jumped from 19th place to a tie for 2nd, as teens especially made the new station their No. 1 choice. Sounds like reggaeton is here to stay.

The top ten, in order: KIIS-FM/KVVS-FM (top 40); KLVE-FM (Spanish Contemporary); KXOL-FM (Hispanic Urban); KFI-AM (Talk); KPWR-FM (hip-hop); KROQ-FM (Alternative); KLAX-FM (Regional Mexican); KSCA-FM (Regional Mexican); KCBS-FM (Adult Hits); KBUE-FM/KBUA-FM (Regional Mexican).
