KROQ phone screener Dave "The King of Mexico" Sanchez gave up sleep this week to set up camp at Hollywood & Highland, where he sat in a barcalounger and kept his eyes glued non-stop to a TV set.
For 72 hours.
When it was all done this morning, the "Kevin & Bean" sidekick had broken the Guinness world record for continuous television watching.
Sanchez beat the previous record-holder, Suresh Joachim, who grabbed the title just last month in New York (sponsored by "Live with Regis & Kelly") by watching TV for 69 hours and 48 minutes.
A web cam, streamed live on KROQ.com all week, kept tabs on Sanchez's performance... leading up to this morning, when a Guinness official confirmed that he had taken the title.
And it didn't sound easy. Here were some of the guidelines:
:: The programs watched can be cable, satellite or terrestrial TV.
:: A list of all the programs and channels viewed and the exact timings must be maintained and submitted as evidence.
:: Channels broadcasting pornography are not allowed.
:: No pre-recorded footage, DVDs or videos are to be watched.
:: Channel hopping is allowed, but the viewer must continue to look at the screen.
:: The TV, which is viewed, must be done so in a public place, not in a private residence.
:: The independent witnesses must sit beside the contestant to ensure that he/she does not fall asleep. If a contestant is seen to be asleep the attempt is ended.
:: The contestant should refrain from closing or rubbing their eyes during the viewing period, as the rest breaks are there for this purpose. Only if absolutely necessary should a contestant rub their eyes.
:: Eating and drinking may take place during the watching of shows, but bathroom visits can only take place during rest breaks.
:: The screen viewed must be a television screen or a projected image onto a screen. The size of the TV does not matter, handheld ones are acceptable.
:: Only one TV screen must be viewed at a time.
Congrats to Dave Sanchez... Los Angeles is proud of you.
