Sleepy Town

In the age-old L.A. vs. N.Y. argument, there's one segment where our East Coast rivals beat us, hands down. New Yorkers love the nightlife (they love to boogie), whereas we Angelenos (yawn) call it a night before Conan's even off the air.

Is it mostly a traffic issue -- the same reason people leave Dodgers games at the end of the seventh inning, and escape the Staples Center with 10 minutes still on the clock? The 2 a.m. cutoff point at bars? Or are we simply early-to-bed, early-to-rise folk?

KROQ's Kevin Ryder, of Kevin and Bean fame, couldn't help but rant this morning after attending Saturday's Nine Inch Nails concert at the Hollywood Bowl. As most of you know, the Bowl has a strict 11 p.m. curfew (out of respect to nearby neighbors), which frequently forces acts to cut their shows short. Apparently Trent Reznor had to cut at least one song from his set Saturday night -- which happened to be the song Kevin was waiting the entire night to hear.

Of course, as I get older... and more sleepy... I've come to appreciate L.A.'s tendency toward shutting down early. Now, if we could only alter L.A.'s obsession with working late (another spot where New Yorkers -- who dash out of work by 6 to catch a train -- get it right).
