Franklin Avenue was quiet this weekend as we headed to Las Vegas, with Blogger Baby in tow. We drove the five-hour journey with Maria's sis and Evan's cousins for a quick dose of Sin City.
Turns out you Sin a lot less in the City when you've got a 10 month-old, a 6 year-old and a 10 year-old in your presence. Still, we hit the city's top buffet (as determined by the Las Vegas Review-Journal) and the best Thai restaurant in the country (according to Jonathan Gold in Gourmet), so from a food standpoint we did all right. (Reviews to come later this week.)
I also managed to once again avoid the Danny Gans show. Who the hell is this guy, and why is he on every cab in town? Sigfried and Roy, all is forgiven.
Some images from our weekend in Vegas:
Abandoned restaurant 30 miles or so outside of Barstow. I'm always surprised at the sheer lack of roadside eateries on the 15 to and from Vegas, given how popular that drive is. Perhaps, in their quest to hit the tables, people just aren't interested in stopping along the way.
Two Elvises (Elvi?) hit the ATM at the Hard Rock Casino and Hotel on Saturday night. Popular costumes, besides the King, included pirates and... Pee Wee Herman. Huh?
World's Tallest Manilow
Something old, something new: The Wynn resort (sorry, didn't see Steve Wynn on the roof) towers over the Frontier Hotel.
Bellagio and Paris dot the skyline
Flash forward 30 years: Evan's gambling problem could be traced to that one, innocent moment when he first hit the slots at the age of 10 months.
The best-named road in the country: Zzyzx. Once the home to a radio evangelist, Zzyzx (rhymes with "Isaacs") is now operated by the California State University system, which runs its desert studies program there.
One more observation: Any of you notice that abandoned water park ("Rock-A-Hoola") located off the 15 smack dab in the middle of the desert? Who ever thought building a water park in the middle of b-f desert was a good idea?!
Also, why oh why is gas so much cheaper in Barstow than in L.A.?
