We first encountered them last year. Having just moved to Glendale, we had no idea why bikers -- thousands of 'em -- had taken over the streets near our Adams Hill home. It was a sight to see.
Turns out we had witnessed the annual Love Ride, the largest one- day motorcycle event in the world. In the name of charity, over 20,000 bikers gather on Glendale Boulevard, near the Glendale/Atwater Village border, on a sunny November morning and drive north on the 5 freeway to Castaic Lake.
From the event website:
We are raising funds for charity and show how motorcyclists are really some of the most charitable people in the world. The beneficiaries of these donations include Reading by 9, a group formed to encourage children to learn to read by the age of 9, ensuring a greater success of the child and a better future for us all. We also support MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association), the official charity of Harley Davidson. Other beneficiaries include City of Hope and a host of other groups.
Changing faces at the Love Ride have included everybody from Malcolm Forbes to Peter Fonda to Larry Hagman. And our main stage has seen everybody from Robbie Kreiger, to David Crosby, Eric Burdon, Jackson Browne, Little Feat, Billy Idol, Bruce Springsteen, Dwight Yoakam, the Doobie Brothers, Sammy Hagar and others.
The 22nd annual Love Ride took place this Sunday, and Maria and I wisely knew how to navigate the streets around it this time. But we still managed to grab a few shots:
UPDATE: The Daily News has coverage of the event here.
