Lincoln Dis-Placed

The Lincoln Place tent city -- where displaced residents of the Venice apartment building have relocated -- plan to hold a Vigil and Mass tonight to mark the battle to keep the historic apartment building open.

From the LincolnPlace.net site:

Celebrate Mass at the Lincoln Place Tent City
Friday, December 9, 2005
Arrive at 6:30 p.m. -- Mass at 7 p.m.
Corner of California Ave. and Frederick St. (1/2 block east of Lincoln Blvd.)
Venice, CA 90291

More than 60 adults and 20 children were illegally locked out of their apartments early Tuesday morning by AIMCO. Please join them, see the historical Lincoln Place Apartments if you haven't already, and learn more about their struggle and the struggle for affordable housing in Los Angeles.

Father Tomas of St. Clement Catholic Church has volunteered to lead an ecumenical mass at our Tent City. Arrangements are also being made to have representatives from other faiths as well. So bundle up, bring candles, and come to support those who have been locked out of their homes by AIMCO, who refuses to continue negotiations with Lincoln Place tenants.

The L.A. Conservancy (more info here) provides background:

The Conservancy, a coalition of preservation organizations, and the complex’s remaining tenants are continuing the fight to save Lincoln Place in Venice, one of our city’s most notable post-World War II apartment complexes. This modernist garden apartment complex was built in Venice between 1949 and 1951 and designed by Heth Wharton and Ralph Vaughn, a significant early African-American architect. The site has been embattled for years, with current owner AIMCO and previous owners attempting to remove the almost 800 rental units from the market, raze the 45 individual buildings that remain, and redevelop the site’s 33 acres with a new condominium project. Seven buildings were demolished in 2003.
