Sumo, American Style

Jozjozjoz fills us in over at Blogging.la: The 6th Annual US Sumo Open takes place this weekend right here in LA!

Coming from Hawaii, sumo was a pretty big deal. The big seasonal tournaments would be broadcast from Japan every night on local TV, and the results reported during local sports reports alongside the usual football/basketball/baseball/University of Hawaii scores. The interest was especially big (pun intended) once several Hawaii-born and/or raised wrestlers started competing and breaking down the sumo walls for foreigners. Legendary wrestlers Konishiki, Akebono and Musashimaru all hail from the Aloha State.

Speaking of Musahimaru, the Yokuzuna "Grand Champion" -- born Fiamalu "Fia" Penitani -- is the special guest at this weekend's event. The skinny (again, pun intended):

2006 US SUMO OPEN
SUNDAY, APRIL 9, 2006, 12:30 PM (doors open 11:30 AM)

Los Angeles Convention Center, Petree Hall (First Floor) go to LACC
The 6th Annual US Sumo Open competition features national and world champions from countries all over the world, including a team from Japan. Watch beautiful Japanese dance, listen to high-energy taiko drumming, and check out fashionable Japanese artwork and souvenirs in the event hall. Enjoy sushi, sake, and Japanese beer while you watch the action!

Musashimaru, considered the greatest American sumo wrestler of them all, stands at 6'4" and weighs 540 lbs. That's a lot of plate lunches.
