Cole's Update

Following up on our Saturday shindig at Cole's P.E. Buffet, reader Scott Mercer -- who lives up above in the Pacific Electric lofts -- gives us a full report on the upcoming fate of the downtown restaurant/bar institution (which was just purchased by the building owners):

The two "back rooms" will be removed, but also a new room for Cole's will be added, sort of on the other side by the kitchen.

Cole's is about to go into escrow, but supposedly the new buyer has been stalling, so its not set in stone just yet. They plan a remodeling, perhaps more like a "refreshening", but one which will not affect the "historic character" of the place. The bar is staying where it is.

The two "back rooms" are becoming another bar, called "The Association." Supposedly owned by the people behind Temple Bar in Santa Monica. Construction won't start for at least a few more months.

Another full service restaurant/bar, a gourmet market, a coffee place, an ice cream place and a drycleaner are coming to the building. Maybe a pet supply place. A UPS Store is opening in about two months.

All the construction, remodeling, new bar, etc. won't be there until the end of this year at the earliest. The way things go with remodeling, more likely about a year from now.

Most (not all)of the signs in there are faux vintage and date from 1967. The tables are also not made from the sides of old Red Cars, as legend has it, but are painted to look like they were.

I kinda suspected that those vintage signs inside weren't really vintage -- they were too perfectly designed. Real signs, especially from the early part of the century, wouldn't be as detailed.
