Adams Hill Mini-Park: One Step Closer

Ground is broken

We were there Thursday morning, cheering on the groundbreaking of a long-awaited mini-park in Glendale's Adams Hill neighborhood. Not only are we excited to have a small park close to our house (perfect for Blogger Baby), but it represented a victory for residents like ourselves, who fought to save the classic Streamline Moderne gas station structure on the site.

You may remember a while back that we threw together the blog Save the Station to preserve the gas station building, a relic of an earlier time and also a focal point for the Adams Hill neighborhood. Thankfully, the city listened, and voted to preserve it.

To show our support and thanks, we braved the sweltering June heat to listen to city officials like Mayor Dave Weaver (below) speechify and break the ground.

More coverage from the Glendale News-Press:

Los Angeles-based Rios Clementi Hale Studios' design for the park will utilize the canopies of the former Richfield Oil Co. gas station as shading for picnic tables and benches. Retaining the 70-year-old station has part of the park was a controversial plan that many area residents were firmly behind.

The park, at the corner of Palmer Avenue and Adams Street, will also include a children's play area, an open lawn area for informal recreation activities and games, lighting and perimeter fencing, a drinking fountain and grove-like trees.

If all goes to plan, the park will open in December.
