ET Comes to AV

Maria, Evan and I had a great time Friday at the first-ever Atwater Village Movie Night, which we wrote about last week.

Held on a small hillside at Atwater Village's Red Car River Park (a small pocket park next to the L.A. River and Hyperion Bridge), organizers rigged a large screen on the side of a building, set up a decent sound system and even poured free popcorn (above). People brought blankets and picnic dinners (we did it Trader Joe's style, with crackers, brie, a sandwich, etc.) With both hipsters and toddlers in the audience, the feature presentation was a perfect fit: "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial."

Highlights of the evening included a surprise appearance by "E.T." star Henry Thomas, who introduced the movie and talked a bit about the Northridge neighborhood where the movie was shot. Just to make us all feel old, Thomas noted that he shot the movie when he was 10 -- and yes, he's now 35. (Sorry, it was too dark to get a decent shot of him.)

Evan slept through much of it, but he caught the beginning and end, and now excitedly talks about "E.T." and points to the sky when talking about the movie. He also was psyched to get a free light stick (above) and demanded to carry the massive bag of Reese's Pieces we won in the raffle after the show.

Impressed by the event's success, the Atwater Village Movie Night organizers hope to hold another one next month.
