Man Bites Dog, or UCLA Beats USC?

The Los Angeles Times has some legitimate problems and weaknesses... but sometimes all of the LAT-bashing is not only uncalled for, but it also just feels like piling on.

For example, I have to respectfully disagree with T.J. Sullivan's lament that the Times' page A-1 coverage of the UCLA upset over USC contained this headline: "This USC story ends without a title."

Sullivan believes UCLA should have been a part of the headline:

I don't profess to know any secret formula to reengage readers in the LA Times, but the the wording and placement of that headline might just be the sort of thing that repels more than a few UCLA faithful.

But honestly, I'd argue in favor of the headline as is. First off, it's a cheesy pun -- and as a Variety staffer, let's just say I love fun, punny headlines. But more importantly, the news was all USC. Nothing changed for UCLA -- they're still going to the Emerald Bowl. Their fate had already been determined pre-rivalry. But for USC, it was a game that changed everything. No longer in the mix for the BCS title, USC saw its fortunes altered. A lot was riding on this game for them... and they blew it. That was the news.
