311 Is (Not) A Joke

Lovin' the LA City Nerd's rather geeky look at Los Angeles' 311 city hotline and its logo through the years (including the newest one, as seen above).

What? You didn't know Los Angeles even had a 311 hotline? I'm not surprised. It's not heavily publicized -- unless you check out the city website (and this page in particular).

The city notes that the 311 service (with the catchy "One Call to City Hall" slogan) gives L.A. residents easy access to info from over 1,400 services. From the city's description:

3-1-1 agents utilize several databases, including the Citywide Service Directory (CSD) to assist customers. The CSD provides accurate information about City services, locations, telephone numbers, hours of operation, and other general information from one centralized repository. 3-1-1 agents provide information in Spanish, English, and for the hearing impaired via telecommunications equipment for the deaf. 3-1-1 is expected to help ease the number of non-emergency calls currently received each year through the City's 9-1-1 emergency system. Callers can access 3-1-1 within the City through hard-wired telephone lines, or through a wireless phone if Cingular, T-Mobile, or Nextel is the wireless service provider. (Cell phones: 3-1-1, *-3-1-1, or 3-1-1-*)

3-1-1 is also available by calling (213) 473-3231; or callers within Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties can call 1-866-4LACITY (1-866-452-2489), toll-free. The hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
