Meet the L.A. Times' New Comic Strip: "Tundra"
Now that "Fox Trot" creator Bill Amend has discontinued the daily strip (turning it into a once-a-week Sunday feature, like "Opus"), the L.A. Times has filled the hole with the Alaska-set comic Tundra, by Chad Carpenter.
The strip revolves around animals and nature in the great white north, with humans sprinkled in for good measure. Most of "Tundra" consists of single-panel gags that aren't tied to any narrative (think "The Far Side"). But the strip also features regular characters: Sherman the Squirrel, Dudley the Bear, Chad the Cartoonist, Andy Lemming, Whiff Skunk, and Hobart the Wise.
Carpenter began drawing "Tundra" 15 years ago for the Anchorage Daily News; before that, he worked on the strip "Mother Goose and Grimm" under Mike Peters. In creating his own strip, Carpenter drew on his experiences growing up in the 49th state,
It was only 2 1/2 years ago that Carpenter expanded his presence in the Anchorage paper. He then began self-syndicating "Tundra," which is now seen in 75 papers across the U.S.
