As we told you earlier this month, Silver Lake Trader Joe's crew member Adam Authier was hit on Hyperion Ave. in February while riding his bike home after working all night. What's worse, it was a hit and run -- another Trader Joe's employee eventually found Authier unconcious on the side of the road.
In January, Authier was the first Trader Joe's employee to rush to the aid of actor Bill Wingard was struck by a car on the crosswalk at Monon, between TJ's and Gelson's (Wingard later died from those injuries). The fact that Authier was later hit on the exact same street is a terrible coincidence.
Unfortunately, Authier didn't have health insurance... and now faces some hefty bills. This weekend is the benefit for Authier that we had mentioned: Head down on Sunday, April 1, to the Grand Avenue Club downtown (1024 S. Grand Ave.) from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The Company of Angels theatre is behind the benefit, which includes music, a silent auction and more.
Martini Republic's Joseph Mailander is a part of the silent auction, and provides more details:
There will be over fifty donated paintings and etchings by local artists there—two of which you see here, watercolors by Martini Republic’s editor, Joseph (one of them actually includes Adam’s Trader Joe’s in the background). Also featured will be an etching by his gal Lynn. You don’t get a chance to bid on these at the kinds of prices they’re going to be set at, so if you love either Trader Joe’s or art (and who doesn’t?), it might behoove you to get yourself down to the Grand Avenue Club this Sunday.
I drive down Hyperion every night on the way back to Franklin Avenue HQ, and as usual I watched people brave the Monon crosswalk -- and barely avoid getting hit by a speeding car. Work will begin next month on the long-awaited traffic light there; it won't come soon enough.
