Rate-A-Restaurant, #145 in a series

Restaurant: Hop Woo

Location: 845 N. Broadway (Chinatown)

Type of restaurant: Chinese

They stipulated: Lunch specials are available 7 days a week, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., or you can order from the menu. We skipped the special and went straight to the menu.

We stipulated: After taking the Metro Gold Line from South Pasadena to Chinatown (always a treat for Blogger Toddler), we wanted lunch. But rather than simply doing the usual -- hitting Empress Pavilion for dim sum -- we wanted to do something different. We didn't do our research though, and settled on Hop Woo because it seemed popular.

What we ordered: Steamed Bean Curd with Scallop in Black Bean Sauce ($10.95); Sauteed Rock Cod Filet with Vegetable (turns out, mostly Bok Choy) ($9.95); Mango Boba ($3)

High point: I was pleased with our selections. The fish was flaky and tender, while the scallop a nice surprise. Tofu had a nice kick to it too.

Low point: The Rock Cod dish was a little too greasy though; they could have toned down the sauce when sauteeing it. Mango Boba was pretty lackluster. Also, the bathroom was quite unpleasant. And because it's cash only, Hop Woo wiped my wallet clean.

Overall impression: I've always thought Chinatown's selections are mostly average (other than Empress). This is slightly higher than that, but still nothing spectacular. But we ordered wisely, and enjoyed it enough that there wasn't even enough for leftovers.

Chance we will go back:: Perhaps... although there are other restaurants to explore as well.
