Rate-A-Restaurant, #146 in a series
(Flickr pic by Experience L.A..)
Restaurant: Ammo
Location: 1155 N. Highland (Hollywood)
Type of restaurant: American
We stipulated: We were meeting friends Shannon and Akhil for the first time in a while, and wanted to hit a Hollywood restaurant before going to a show at the Roxy. It was a toss up between Ammo and Lucky Devil's.
They stipulated: At short notice, they didn't have many available tables -- but they did have one outside.
What we ordered: Maria: Wild Bass, $28 (braised in the wood oven with baby artichokes, teardrop tomatoes, cannellini beans, preserved lemon, Castelveltrano olives, white wine and fresh herbs). Mike: Turkey meatloaf, $19 (with horseradish mash potatoes and sauteed cavolo nero)
High point: I do love the turkey meatloaf at Ammo -- it's a guilty pleasure.
Low point:I'm afraid, too many. The food is on the overpriced side; I'm used to dining at Ammo at lunch, when the prices aren't as bad... dinner set us back a lot more than it should have. Also, we were seated right next to two heavy chain smokers, and the stench of their cigarettes kept floating over us. Service, I'm sad to say, was spotty.
Overall impression: Ammo's a great place to go on a business lunch, and I love the New York vibe of it. But it's just not worth the huge dinner expense.
Chance we will go back: I will, but for lunch.
