Let There Be Christmas Tree Lights

(Flickr photo by Jory.)

Maybe it's the cool countdown, and the ultimate payoff. Maybe it's the appearance by the hefty one in a red suit. Maybe it's the blinking lights. Whatever the reason, little ones -- Blogger Toddler included -- love Christmas tree lightings. (We even did an impromptu one, sans Santa, at Maria's mom's house.)

It's funny, these kind of events didn't have as much appeal (crowds! Elementary school choirs! Santa!) pre-Blogger Toddler. But with the little guy in the house, we seek out such events.

And for fans of such events, it's a big week. You could find yourself at a different neighborhood or city event every day this week. If you're looking for a Christmas tree lighting, here's your list:

  • TONIGHT, DEC. 5: Glendale's Holiday Tree Lighting -- 7 p.m., Glendale City Hall (613 E. Broadway)

The 23rd annual event features performances by the Hoover High School Chamber Singers, the R.D. White Elementary School choir. Santa will be there; free hot chocolate and candy canes as well.

  • THURSDAY, DEC. 6: Atwater Village Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, 6:30 p.m., Wells Fargo parking lot (3250 Glendale Blvd)

The 15th annual event takes advantage of the real, live tree that towers over Glendale Blvd. (see pic above). A Christmas festival also takes place at the same time, featuring local school choirs, dance academies, the Tam O'Shanter singers, and master of ceremonies Catherine Dent ("The Shield"). Councilmen Eric Garcetti and Tom LaBonge (these guys must spend December just shuttling from holiday event to holiday event) will be there too.

  • FRIDAY, DEC. 7: Toluca Lake Holiday Open House, 5:30 p.m., Falcon Theatre (4252 Riverside Drive)

The only event to feature weatherman Fritz Coleman (I still miss his old blue glasses, by the way). Coleman is "honorary mayor of Toluca Lake" (just like Nancy Cartwright is "honorary mayor of Northridge" -- seriously, who passes these things out?) and will be there, along with the usual assortment of local school performers and a bagpipe band. Local stores will be open and will pass out refreshments (free wine? Someone report back) while Santa will, of course, hang out too.

Sorry kids, Santa won't be granting the one wish of non-wealthy Toluca Lakeans: The ability to actually visit Toluca Lake. Ho, ho, ho, Santa may be magical, but not that magical!
