Another New Comic Strip in the L.A. Times

The L.A. Times debuted another new comic this week, Scott Hilburn's "Argyle Sweater."

Single-panel strip is so new that it launched nationally on Monday, the same day the LAT picked it up. Universal Press Syndicate sold the strip to more that 130 clients.

"Argyle Sweater" came out of Universal Press Syndicate's online comics incubator, "Comics Sherpa," where aspiring cartoonists can try out their craft. The syndicate liked what it saw and later moved it to its more premiere GoComics.com site.

Meanwhile, the LAT said "Argyle Sweater" replaces the old strip "Herman" -- and here's the weird part: "Herman" has apparently been in reruns since 1997. The LAT has been running repeats of a so-so comic for over 10 years?! Bizarre. "Peanuts" repeats, I get. But was there a huge cry to keep "Herman"?

As for the new strip Cafe Con Leche, which the paper has been trying out in the Doonesbury spot... I haven't been impressed. Hopefully the next tryout will be, well, funnier.
