Chickens in Love: A Kid-Friendly Fundraiser and Musical Event

Help support arts education for youth this weekend: 826LA is presenting "Chickns in Love," an online pledge-a-thon fundraiser, full-length album and one-day music festival.

The full-length album includes songs written by 826LA students -- and recorded by artists such as She & Him, Fiona Apple, Cold War Kids, Tim and Eric, The Submarines, Summer Darling, The Happy Hollows, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Dum Dum
Girls, The Growlers, Crystal Antlers and The Pity Party.

Make a monetary pledge via 826LA's online fundraiser here. Details:

Each song was written by 826LA students in Songwriting with The Submarines, a workshop led by singer/songwriters John Dragonetti and Blake Hazard of The Submarines. Choose from student bands Hot Fudge, Pig Power, The Gummy Bears, The Peeps, The Shaking Churros, The Taco Shells, Kimi, Shizuku, and Xena, Jennifer Lopez, SLAP ENT. (pronounced "Slap Entertainment") and The Weirdos. Your donations will help support our free programs for LA youth. Pledge as often and for as many bands and/or songs as you like. Pledges over $30 are tax-deductible. The most popular student song will be awarded the 826LA Gold Record!

I love all the original names for the bands -- especially "The Shaking Churros" and "The Taco Shells." Who says there's no original band names left out there? (I also kinda love the fact that someone namd their band Jennifer Lopez -- unless that's actually someone's name.)

As for this weekend's one-day all ages Mini Music Festival, event takes place this Saturday, March 6, at 1 p.m. at the Echoplex.

Performers include The Submarines, Summer Darling, The Happy Hollows, The Growlers, and more. More info here.

Origami Vinyl owner Neil Schield, a 826LA volunteer, is writing about Chickens in Love here. We'll see you this Saturday.
