Retro Friday: Metromedia Square
Above, a sign-on message for KTTV-Channel 11, back when it was still owned by Metromedia. (Rupert Murdoch bought the chain in 1985, using the Metromedia stations to launch Fox in 1986). This spot contains shots of the old Metromedia Square, which later became the Fox Television Center. Metromedia, which still owned the property after KTTV was sold, eventually sold the land to LAUSD -- which built Helen Bernstein High School on the site.
Also in the clip: The Los Angeles Police Band performs the national anthem in the Metromedia Square courtyard.
Metromedia Square was the home of Norman Lear's production company, and several of his 1970s sitcoms, including "All in the Family" and "The Jeffersons," shot there.
Meanwhile, a few more recent finds:
Above, a 1975 promo for KNBC news. And below, one from 1979 KNBC -- featuring Bryant Gumbel and Pat Sajak, among others.
