'In Los Angeles, They Eat Something Called Tacos'
One of the cool things about by new job? I'm sitting right next to a bound-copy collection of every TV Guide issue ever published, dating back to its 1953 launch. Every once in a while, when I have a spare moment, I can't resist flipping through an old issue or two.
The old listings are fascinating -- but so are the features. Take this page from 1954: As TV Guide began highlighting regional cuisine, here's their entry on Los Angeles. Yes, in 1954, tacos were still considered quite the exotic dish. The word "tacos" is even awkwardly capitalized here. Check out the heavy-on-the-frying recipe; it's pretty much how tacos are still made at retro spots like El Coyote.
