It's the October edition of our monthly TV podcast on KCRW, The Spin-Off! This month, Joe and I are joined by The Huffington Post's Maureen Ryan. Here's what we discuss:
Now that viewers have had a couple weeks to sample this year’s fall TV season, networks are starting to separate the tricks from the treats in primetime. But more than ever, they’re also looking at HOW and WHEN shows are being watched--and we dive into why these details are important.
One of those new fall shows is Fox’s Gracepoint, which is an adaptation of another show, the UK series Broadchurch, which aired on BBC America last year. And there are more adaptations and remakes coming down the pike. David Lynch is bring a continuation of Twin Peaks to Showtime in 2016. Do all these reboots and reinterpretations mean have we simply run out of ideas or is the possibility of working with an already established property just too good to pass up?
And finally, we’ll take a look at some of the new and returning shows on cable and online this month. Showtime’s big winner Homeland returns for a fourth season, but lacking one of its major characters. Will the series hold up? Another Showtime show, The Affair, has been gathering lots of critical acclaim for its pilot, but no one has seen anything beyond that. Should we be worried? And when we say online, we don’t just mean Netflix anymore... Amazon has officially arrived with the Jill Soloway series Transparent.
