Retro Friday: Glendale's Grand Central Air Terminal



Long before LAX, there was Glendale's Grand Central Air Terminal -- the original commercial airport serving L.A.

The airport is long gone, of course, and Disney now owns terminal building, surrounded by an industrial section of Glendale.

Via eBay, I recently bought this vintage matchbook from the Grand Central Air Terminal... it inspired me to once again dig up this short documentary (which I first posted last year), narrated by Fritz Coleman, about the era "When Glendale Ruled the Skies":

Before there was LAX, Glendale's Grand Central Air Terminal was the L.A. region's key airport. That all changed with World War II... and by 1959, the airport was shut down completely. Here's a mini-documentary on the history of Grand Central.
