The L.A. City Council's Tuesday vote to force Wal-Mart to fund studies proving their supercenters won't harm neighboring communities had players on both sides declaring victory.
Writes the L.A. Times: City officials pushing the law believe that Wal-Mart may have a tough time showing that its mega-stores would have a positive impact on communities, which could give the City Council a reason to reject them.
But Wal-Mart officials declared Tuesday that the proposed law was a win for the company, saying the firm kept Los Angeles from adopting an all-out ban on the Supercenters — 200,000-square-foot stores that combine the traditional discount offerings with groceries.
We haven't heard the last from Wal-Mart. I still gotta say, even if the company didn't have such a negative impact, bottom line -- it's just a terrible shopping experience. Crowded shelves, screaming kids, terrible store designs... talk about unpleasant. We'll occasionally hit the Porter Ranch location (near Chatsworth and Northridge) and man, I can't get out of there fast enough. Viva Target! (Which, incidentally, also is affected by the ruling, should it try to open its Super Target concept here.)
